What is an Action Figure?

Many have debated what classifies a figure or toy, as an Action Figure. Before a figure can be classified as an action figure it must possess a certain amount of posability, often referred to as "points of articulation". These action figures will have moving parts that can be manipulated into various poses. They most commonly come with interchangeable accessories such as weapons or snap-on backpacks. They are made of plastic or other materials, and often based upon characters from comic books, films, television programs or video games. Action figures can vary in sizes from approximately 3 inches up to 11 inches.

Action figures are most commonly marketed towards boys and adult collectors. It has been discussed that action figures are particularly popular with boys due to them representing traditional masculine traits. While more often than not marketed as a children's toy, the action figure has gained wide acceptance as an adult collector item. In such cases, the item may be produced and designed on the assumption it will be bought solely for display within or without its original packaging.
